The Penn Yan Racquet Club originated in the former Elmwood Theatre, with shadows of the old balcony and echoes of vaudevillians, accompanying play. That is until Penn Yan demolished the building to construct its new village hall.
The club, expanded to include racquetball players, and raised money for the new building through members contributing a "share", and a generous donation from our former landlord. Construction was a true "barn raising", with a local Mennonite construction crew. Originally on "Sewer Plant Lane", the street address was changed to 10 Elmwood Court to honor the old Elmwood Theater, our site of origin. Our name was amended to Penn Yan Racquet Club to reflect the addition of the racquetball court and the pickleball courts.
With the onset of the COVID Pandemic, PYRC implemented remediation procedures to protect our membership. A new air handling system was installed to improve air circulation and a set of Germicidal UV lamps were installed in an effort to provide further protection. When New York State implemented a 100% mandate of either masks or vaccination in December of 2021, the club Board opted for full vaccination only. This policy has been rescinded by the Board and is no longer in effect.
